If you haven’t heard, according to “certain sources” and “some people,” Glenn Beck might have raped and murdered a young girl in 1990. He didn’t, but it is certainly true that he might have, and that is the basis of a satirical online campaign which aims to demonstrate how dangerous the faux-journalism, circular logic, and vague accusations of Beck and other pundits are. So what should we make of this coercion of his irresponsible techniques? Is it deserved?
“What I feel like saying is… Sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies. And I know you’re not, I’m not accusing you of being an enemy, but that’s the way I feel, and I think a lot of Americans will feel that way.” – Glenn Beck, to Muslim congressman Keith Ellison.
So what? He said he wasn’t making an accusation, right? Likewise, the perpetrators of this backlash campaign are not necessarily accusing Beck of raping and murdering a young girl in 1990 – they’re just saying that it might have happened, and that it would be reassuring to have proof that it didn’t. Clearly the rumor exists, right?
Beck could have said to the Representative, “There’s a lot of religious and ethnic tension in America right now, and as a Muslim congressman you’re going to face unique challenges – some Americans might not trust you, they might question your loyalty – is this something you’ve thought about, etc.?” But that’s not what he said. He said, “Sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies.”
If you want more on Beck, it shouldn’t take long with the help of Google (and apparently you haven’t been paying attention to anything about anything for a while). He also accused President Obama of being a racist, despite lacking any evidence to support this claim (edit: though he does have “evidence”), and makes vague, irresponsible claims that “something” is going on in the United States. The list goes on (my personal favorite is finding “communist” art at Rockefeller Center). Also, he can’t spell.
So in response, a significant segment of the internet is asking Mr. Beck to prove that he did not rape and murder a young girl in 1990. There is “a totally legitimate police report”. There is a poll – and we all know how much polls represent truth (Beck’s own network helped to teach us that).
So that’s the joke. If he’s innocent, why doesn’t he come out and say it? Why doesn’t he deny the allegations? These are his techniques at work against him, and this clearly satirical campaign of misinformation will eventually seep into the ears and minds of the people Beck is influencing.
I’m entirely not sure what I think about the whole thing. I think Beck is a sensationalist prick, for sure, and I’m glad the internet is putting his lessons in propaganda to good use (you know, for lulz), though I do feel there is potential for this attack to go too far. I don’t believe that it has at the moment – right now, the satire is apparent to the point of absurdity. Everyone knows that Glenn Beck is not a murderer – the point of the thing is to demonstrate that anyone can say anything, and convince others of it just by saying it. That’s the thing about misinformation – it doesn’t matter how it starts, once it is repeated enough, it becomes fact.
I must say, this joke is demonstrating its point with superb precision and wit, and my distaste for Beck makes it difficult for me to take an impartial view of its ethicality. If anyone deserves it, it’s probably him. In all likelihood, very little will occur as a result of this satire, and I do sincerely hope that it will be seen for what it is: a clever, poignant, Orwellian joke.

UPDATE: Someone directed me to this article from The Examiner which claims that this rumor is “a desperate attempt to discredit Glenn Beck.” Despite the point being larger than the side of a barn-making factory, they have missed it by miles. I’d say about 1,252 miles.

I want to have a strong stance against this, however if anyone deseveres this it is Glen Beck. Beck and Limbaugh have to be the two biggest fear mongers in the world, feeding on the fears of the average minded citizens of this countries. At least O’Reilly isn’t completely a dip shit, like those first two assholes. I find it funny that Beck constantly make accusations about President Obama being a racist who is out to kill all white people(WHICH HE ACTUALLY SAID), and he and Limbaugh actually skrit the line between twinges of racism to out and out basic racism.

Wow, thanks! I’m so glad to see such a coordinated effort to stand up to Beck’s brand of propaganda. It made me uneasy at first, and I know I’m not bold enough to initiate such a biting satire myself, but damn the torpedoes – people like Beck are raping and murdering the truth, which takes a lot of gall after doing the same to a young girl in 1990.

The amount of evidence supporting the claim that Glenn Beck did not murder then proceed to anally rape a young girl in the early 1990s is sorely lacking.

It says right on the site and on this blog that it is a parody, satire, it’s a joke trying to get a point across. I don’t personally hate Glenn Beck. I don’t know if I really hate anyone. I believe vehemently that his tactics are irresponsible and are polluting rational discourse. I believe that of many people in the media. I would like to have a rational discussion on the merits of, say, public health care, but everything is becoming polarized. Liberals and conservatives are both at fault – though Beck is certainly one of the worst offenders.

That was a qualified statement when he used the word “I believe”. He did not say “Obama is racist” which takes on an entirely different meaning. The leader of the Apollo project, main writers of the stimulus package, is headed by Jeff Jones (the other co-founder of Weather Underground). Obama’s community activism is patterned after Saul Alinsky. His views are extreme. Van Jones, avowed communist, is advising the president on green jobs. Are you seeing a pattern yet? and it doesn’t make you the least bit nervous or would all of you rather blindly defend Obama without doing a serious analysis of the president, his past and the people he surrounds himself with?

While I am less inclined to argue with someone who already considers me “so stupid”, I’ll bite. Who is controlling the war in Afghanistan and Iraq? Who promised Guantanimo would be shut down? Who is responsible for policies between Iran or North Korea? Obama or Beck?
It sure seems Obama has control on Congress. Who pushed for nearly $1 trillion for a stimulus package and got it? Who got Cap and Trade legislation through the house? Who is circumventing the FBI vetting that allows people in the White House that have questionable backgrounds? Who can get taxes raised? Who gave billions to failing “big businesses” like the bankers and the auto industry? Obama or Beck?
With that in mind, Beck didn’t have one iota of influence on me becoming involved in the Health Care debate. (I don’t listen to Rush at all) What got me involved was our countries leadership disparaging good people that came together to fight for what they believe is true… that is American. The final straw for me was Pelosi calling the opposition to HC “astroturf”. It wasn’t until several weeks into my own personal campaign, writing and calling legislators that I found Beck. He simply was repeating what I believed. You see, the fallacy of your thinking is ALL the people against HC, Cap and Trade or even the Tea Parties are controlled drones of Beck or Limbaugh. I know these people, they are me and I am them, and I know that not to be true. We are just tired of the direction of our gov’t, it’s out of control spending and lack of leadership coming from the WH.
Yet….when liberals did this two years ago, people like Beck and his ilk said that they “Unpatriotic”. Secondly, those surplus were idea’s of President Geroge W. Bush. Not Obama’s ideals. Actually, Travis I do have a degree in Business. The best way to get the economy going is get money back into the system to allow small businesses to grow. You don’t save big business, it is the small businesses that make this economy thrive.
The problem with the stimulus package is it does not infuse money into the economy where it needs to be, back into the businesses that need to fund operating expenses and growth.
So far the only thing the stimulus money has done is funded state debt. Very little has gone toward projects that have produced jobs… have you heard the job numbers that it has created so far, I haven’t? A huge problem, when other countries feel like our nat’l debt is out of control, they will limit their loans or charge us more? That will cause inflation, stagnate the economy and devalue the dollar to the point that we will become a 2nd rate nation, not a super power.
“Cash for Clunkers” is a joke if you understand the basics of economics. All the gov’t did was subsidize the auto industry… remember the gov’t is still throwing money at a failing “big business”. So why rescue the auto industry, to save GM? NO, to save the big business called unions and appease his base. So we saw a surge in car sales for the month of July and August, sounds really good hearing that on the TV doesn’t it? The problem was it really “new sales” or was it people sitting back thinking, well in the next couple of months we need a new car, minds well do it now to take advantage of the deal? You my friends, just paid for someone else to buy a car. Wouldn’t have been nice to have the extra cash you see go out of your own pocket for taxes make a payment for your own new car rather than someone else? Essentially, the government advanced the sales that would have happened in Sept, Oct and Nov. What will those sales look like in those months, if they are even more depressed then Cash for Clunkers was an abysmal failure.
I heard that the apollo alliance were the group (people) who wrote the majority of the stimulus package. Now, if that is true, it’s pretty shitty. I also heard that Van Jones has a seat on the apollo alliance. If that is true, it’s pretty shitty.

You are confusing dialog about race relations and accusatory statements. Talking about race is not the same as making accusations of “hatred toward white people.” We could discuss whether or not Obama’s support of his church suggests that he agrees with the claims of Rev. Wright, we could have a reasoned discussion about that. But the question here is not “is Obama a racist?” The question is, “Is it responsible to make hard accusations with only circumstantial evidence? Is it responsible to imply that someone is a terrorist by asking them to prove that they are not?”

You may be missing the point here. This satire is a statement about irresponsible media, and not a defense of Obama. “Blindly defending” Obama is not the intention. I am open for discussion and debate about Obama’s past and present political relationships, but in a responsible manner. I believe that every politician should be criticized. However, this, right now, is a criticism and rather amusing satire of Glenn Beck and Fox News, not because they don’t like Obama, but because I believe that they make inflammatory statements when they could make reasoned statements, and have a national stage with which they spread what I consider misinformation through omission and circular logic.
Actually, I started paying attention to politics for the same reason but, like you, I was only looking at one side. My parents were Democrats. I started researching the views of both sides of the fence and found that I thought more like a conservative than a liberal. Today, I don’t align myself with the Republican party, Bush spent like a Democrat and was fiscally irresponsible. If that is the GOP, I didn’t want anything to do with them. The Dems are spending like a homeless man in a whorehouse who just won the lottery. You guys are younger on this site, pay attention to how much is being spent by the government, that is ALL that matters. it is YOUR future they are wasting. In the end, if they spend $1 trillion on a war or $1 trillion on a stimulus package and all we get in the end is debt, its all a waste. Remember, that nearly ALL government programs cost 50% to administer them. So right off the bat, half the money is wasted.

Van Jones said that he didn’t know what he was signing. The WH has already accepted that statement and dismissed the criticisms on Van Jones. The problem, the group that was passing out the petition, the 9/11 Truthers, claims he knew what he was signing. The question is, who is lying?
The 80’s, recession, did you study what Jimmy Carter did, causing double digit inflation? Travis, go back and look at the Congress during those times of presidency, it’ll be enlightening. Clinton did not use fiscal restraint. He was lucky that the GOP had the Contract with America and held Clinton to the fire about a balanced budget amendment. Clinton resisted a Balanced budget until his poll numbers started dropping.

So, because of this evidence, you support the idea that “Barack Obama has a deep-seated hatred for white people?” That’s fine, but I will take more convincing. I would like to see evidence of actions which Barack Obama has taken which suggest that he hates me.
John McCain said, “I hated the gooks. I will hate them as long as I live.” He nearly became president. Obama said “typical white” and knows some people with more extreme views than his, and thus he has “hatred for white people.”
I’m not convinced. Still, this is not what this is about. You keep bringing it up, but it isn’t the point. The point is that Fox news is entertainment, but it is irresponsible entertainment. It is entertainment which is presented as truth. And the entertainment they present is filled with hyperbole and misinformation.
They are inciting rather than informing.

Ha, I just caught this – “and fuck the states”. You really need to go back and get an education on how are founding fathers framed this country. Essentially, they believed that states were independent and could make their own laws and have their own Constitutions. As we give more power to Washington DC, it centralizes the power of the government into the hands of a few people and away from the states. As an extreme example, the people in California are very different than North Dakota, how can a centralized gov’t actually govern such a broad spectrum of views. The reality for them was it was not possible. If the states maintained individual power with limited power from DC (centralized government power) then the USA would thrive. The problem comes from mandated laws coming from DC but aren’t funded, forcing states to obey the federal law but have limited resources to pay for them. A classic example are the law that says a government agency can not demand identification when applying for welfare. California has a 30% Mexican population. I have no idea how many are illegal. The illegal aliens go to Welfare Dept, the state can not ask for ID (federal law) and have people taking from the system that aren’t putting anything into it (not paying taxes) Guess how long a state can survive? There are all kinds of Ecology laws on the books that mandate a state do, once again, they make the law but expect the state to pay for it. It was NOT the way our founders set the system up.

In terms of “the level of debate that happens here,” I have to tell you, this is the first time any debate has happened here. Should any group of people who have collectively adopted Sarah Palin as their hero and roll model, be allowed anywhere near decision making and the running of America? If they are so against granting some basic human rights and a fare civil court trial to the accused 911 defendants, I suppose we should deny the defendant in the Fort Hood friendly fire incident all of his rights too? Sure the defendant is an American citizen – yet, His skin doesn’t look much more white than the skin on the 911 defendants; so, hey, should we just screw the court hassle Republicans? Why give him a platform to defend himself and the opportunity to leak something that might make us look bad? We know he’s probably guilty of the crime so let’s just tribunal him. We could fast- stamp him through a morning tribunal and have him shot and silenced after lunch. Okay I will wind down my rant, but not before I mention that if I hear one more republican wining about the rules of engagement – rules that Obama has returned to humane standards by removing all of the torture-inclusions slipped in during the Bush Chaney disaster, – just one more wine, and I’m likely to pull a Palin and just go rogue. What do you want the rules to be Republicans? Should we conduct a war while sporadically torturing our enemy just to save the lives of few thousand soldiers who, on their own free will, volunteered to join up and war monger around the world for Bush’s oil?
